SOUND SERVICE SUPPORT NOISE ACTION WEEK (19 – 23rd May 2008)
NEARLY HALF OF THE UK SUFFER FROM A NOISY HOME
A survey conducted by Mori has shown that nearly half of the UK’s population feels their life suffers due to noise when they are at home. This figure has risen 35 % since 2006 and 2% of people surveyed say they had moved house to escape noisy neighbours.
Noise Action Week (19 – 23rd May 2008) is co-ordinated by Environmental Protection UK the environmental protection charity supported by pollution control professionals. They have been working for a cleaner, quieter, healthier world since 1898. This year Noise Action Week is set to highlight street sounds as they are working in partnership with Walk to School, who are encouraging local travel co-ordinators to get kids out on the street as "Sound Detectives" during the week, sussing out sounds on their way to school. For more info on Noise Action Week please go to http://www.noiseactionweek.org.uk/
Noise mediation is the preferred method of reducing unwanted neighbourhood noise but this does not always work or in some cases the complainant would rather soundproof their property.
Sound Service (Oxford) Ltd has been supplying D.I.Y domestic soundproofing materials and advice for nearly 40 years and their products are easy to install with little or no experience and provide effective soundproofing for floors, walls and ceilings as well as other common domestic noise problems.
Many people think that soundproofing is a costly and time consuming exercise when in fact you can treat most surfaces from as little as £30 per square metre.
Soundproofing increases the properties value and make it far more sellable if and when you want to move.
Sound Service offer a range of systems to treat all types of noise. These include;
Don’t go on suffering with your noisy neighbour; call the friendly team at Sound Service to discuss what would be the right treatment for you. There are no pressure sales and no sales person will need to call.
There is even a quick and easy to use program called “Sound Wizard” on their website that will find the right product for your problem.
If you are experiencing any noise problem then Sound Service (Oxford) should be your first port of call. They offer free and impartial advice without any pressure selling. For more information please see Sound Service’s website www.soundservice.co.uk or call the friendly team on 0845 363 7131.

ECHOSOPRTION PLUS STOPS SCHOOL BACK CHAT !!
Sound Service were called to Hillcross Primary School in Merton, London as their school hall was suffering from a noisy 'echo'. This severely reduced the ability to hold normal conversations within the room, particularly when the room was full of children and made it particularly difficult for children with hearing difficulties.
Their engineers installed Echosorption Plus sound absorbing tiles over the entire ceiling and this treatment not only enhanced the appearance of the room but totally transformed the acoustics. The 'echo' was gone and the hall could once again, hold lots of children and staff with no difficulty in speech being heard and understood.
"If you are unsure on whether you have a room that requires this treatment, stand in the middle of the room when it is empty and clap your hands once and listen to the echo. If it takes more than a second for the echo to disappear then you have a reverberation problem that can easily be cured with our products." Describes Stephen Young, Technical Manager
Echosorption Plus is available from stock and is very easy to install. To obtain a FREE sample please email tech@soundservice.co.uk with your details.

FED UP WITH NOISY PUBS AND CLUBS?
"In 2006 noisy pubs, clubs & entertainment venues affected over 5 million people in the UK that is approx 9 % of the population." (Source Mori Poll 2006)
Our research would suggest this has dramatically increased in the last 2 years.
Everyone likes to let their hair down and enjoy a good live band or DJ over their favourite tipple. Noise and alcohol are becoming more commonly associated especially since the smoking ban has forced smokers outside.
Sound Service (Oxford) has today published an online article designed to offer practical help for licensed premises who suffer with noise related complaints and problems.
There are many cost effective ways that a venue can reduce airborne noise transference to neighbouring properties. These include introducing a double door system, adding secondary glazing and ensuring all external duct work or air conditioning has sound reducing baffles in place over the vents.
“We supply a full range of products that a landlord or brewery can use to help reduce their noise problem. In our experience if the breweries own the properties they are reluctant to spend money to safeguard their license. We have produced this simple online guide to show what small things can be done to reduce a fair amount of sound
The cost of losing a public entertainment license and then the subsequent trade associated with that would be far more costly than installing some of our products.” Outlines Steve Backhouse of the Technical Team.
Sound Service would advise anyone suffering with noise related problems from licensed premises to pass the companies details to the owner or licensee BEFORE taking the matter to the local authorities themselves. This will give the pub or club a chance to treat the noise issue without being threatened with court action.

A QUIET FLOOR FROM SOUND SERVICE
Around one in five people in the UK hear noise from their neighbours and almost half of those are annoyed by it.
Sound Service (Oxford) Ltd was established in 1969, it’s main aim to reduce unwanted neighbourhood noise and supply effective sound reducing products to the whole of the UK.
“There are two main types of transmitted noise, Airborne sound and impact based sound. Ordinarily you would need a combination of products to treat both the noise typess. We found our cutomers wanted an “all in one” solution and in the early 1970’s we developed Quietfloor.” Describes Stephen Young, Company Manager.
Quietfloor is only 12mm thick and made from two layers of mineral loaded mass vinyl with a rubber chipfoam sandwich in the centre. Each vinyl layer is equal in performance to that of lead sheet and blocks out airborne sound superbly. The rubber chipfoam core reduces the impact sound caused when people walk on the floor. These two products combined make Quietfloor one of Sound Service’s best sellers in the domestic market.
Quietfloor is normally used under carpet and replaces the need for a standard carpet underlay. It is also very effective on stair treads and meets the PART E building regulations when be bonded to concrete floors.
Sound Service prides itself on being a market leader for recycled products and 67 % of each slab of Quietfloor is made from recycled rubber.
To obtain your free sample and for advice on how Quietfloor can silence your home please call 0845 363 7131.

SILENT LAMINATE FLOOR – NO MORE COMPLAINING NEIGHBOURS !!
Laminate floors are one of the biggest causes of domestic noise problems. Whilst they provide an easy to clean and child friendly flooring solution they are not neighbour friendly. When you walk on these surfaces a large amount of impact as well as airborne noise is created (due to the hard surface) this can often be a nuisance to the people living below.
Sound Service (Oxford) Ltd has recently added an Acoustic Laminate Underlay to their extensive soundproofing range. The Acoustic Laminate Underlay is designed specifically to reduce the impact noise (walking/footfall) creating when walking on a laminate, engineered wooden floor.
The Acoustic Laminate Underlay is made up of a 4.2mm layer of high density resilient rubber sponge with a foil faced moisture barrier laminated to one side. It can be easily cut with a knife or scissors and if used in conjunction with the soundproofing mats from Sound Service, it will provide both impact AND airborne noise reduction through the floor with minimal height rise.
As well as offering superior sound performance the underlay also incorporates a vapour barrier, eliminating the need for extra moisture protection such as polythene sheeting and is also suitable for use with under floor heating.
Sound tests have shown that the Acoustic Laminate Underlay has a weighted Impact Sound Improvement Index of (Delta Lw) 27dB!! As a percentage it would perform approximately 40 % better than a standard “off the shelf” laminate underlay from a DIY chain.
To obtain a sample of this product please email your details to marketing@soundservice.co.uk For more information please see Sound Service’s website www.soundservice.co.uk or call the friendly team on 0845 363 7131.

Multi Award Winning Acoustic Membrane silences ceilings.
Sound Service (Oxford) Ltd has recently added an award winning Acoustic Membrane to its extensive range of Soundproofing products.
The 1.2mm thick nano vacuumed rubber membrane blocks airborne noise in a similar way to lead. The Acoustic Membrane has won many awards including the “European Merit Award Winner for Research & Technology” 1999 - 2001.
The thinness of this product provides minimum loss of room space with maximum noise reduction. The membrane only weighs 2Kg/ m² and is easy to handle and carry.
“Before the introduction of the Acoustic Membrane our customers were using our heavy Soundproofing Mat on the ceiling. Although the products perform the same way, the Acoustic Membrane is so much lighter and easier to work with. It can even be pre stuck and overlapped to plasterboard before it is offered up to the ceiling.” Outlines Stephen Backhouse from the companies Technical Team.
The Acoustic Membrane should be sandwiched between two layers of plasterboard and has revolutionised the way a ceiling is soundproofed. Work can now be carried out by a single person as the roll is simple to work with making for a quick, easy, home improvement product.
The membrane easily folds and bends round corners and edges to protect against flanking sound. This has meant that it is being specified for use between fabric and other materials to help reduce noise between working areas.
Not only is it versatile it boasts a very high Performance noise reduction of (22dB Rw) for minimal thickness and is well in excess of Part E of the Building Sound Regulations when used in conjunction with other materials.
To obtain a sample of this product please email your details to marketing@soundservice.co.uk . For more information please see Sound Service’s website www.soundservice.co.uk or call the friendly team on 0845 363 7131.

Sound Service (Oxford) Silence Noisy Washing Machines
Do you or your neighbour suffer from a noisy washing machine or gym equipment? If the answer is yes then you need the Vibration Pad from Sound Service (Oxford).
Vibrating washing machines and home gym equipment such as running machines produce a large amount of vibration noise which in many cases transmits through the joists and floor to the neighbour below.
The anti Vibration Pad from Sound Service is made from a hard recycled rubber and whilst it does not reduce the airborne sound created from the machine it does decouple the machine or equipment from the floors surface, thus reducing the impact sound it produces.
This versatile pad is available in either 10 or 20mm thickness and is supplied in a 1 square metre panel. It can be easily cut with a jigsaw or hand saw and is black in colour.
The Vibration Pad is also often used under:

REDUCE ECHO WITH SOUND ABSORBING PHOTOGRAPHS FROM SOUND SERVICE (OXFORD).
If you suffer from echo in your workspace or home then Photosorption is the product for you.
Sound Service (Oxford) Ltd manufacture a range of soundproofing and sound absorbing products from their base in the Cotswolds. The Photosorption panels are made from traditional sound absorbers which are then covered in acoustically transparent polyester. Sound Service provide you with two options for adding a photograph, you can supply your own image such as a company logo or family portrait or allow them to find an image for you from their database. The image is then printed onto the fabric and provides a full wrap around effect as commonly seen on many canvas images.
Reduction of sound reverberation is important in large open plan areas such as restaurants, coffee bars, conference rooms and schools. When mounted on a wall, the Class O fireproof Photosorption panel will effectively absorb noise at that point and efficiently reduce the 'bounce back' of the sound. This is particularly effective in areas where a large amount of noise is generated and affected by the surrounding hard surfaces of walls, floors and ceilings and the more there are installed the greater the reduction will be of reverberated noise. The sound absorbing panels can be made in many sizes and they perform to Class C standard. There is only a minimum order of two panels so these are an ideal solution for home owners as well as businesses.
Photosorption can be seen on Sound Service’s website www.soundservice.co.uk and samples are available for business customers. Please call the friendly team on 0845 363 7131.

Since the updated Part E building regulations in 2003, new build homes and conversions have had to comply with stricter sound insulation requirements.
Nearly 5 years on, Sound Service (Oxford) reflects on whether tougher regulations have improved the lives of new homeowners.
Document E, Resistance to the Passage of Sound 2003 edition, plus amendments in 2004, stipulates single figure sound insulation ratings for both airborne radiated noise, at separating party floors and walls, and for impact noise at party floor level.
Anyone applying for planning permission after the change in 2003 should have built the property to the new standard thus improving the level of sound insulation for the occupant.
Many environmental health offices claim they have not noticed a dramatic reduction in noise complaints in properties built since 2003. This shows there is still room for improvement within the recommended level of sound insulation.
Sound Service (Oxford) is approaching their 40 year anniversary and has been a key provider of soundproofing & sound absorbers to the whole of the UK. They provide a wide range of solutions to comply with and exceed Part E. Unlike many companies their systems are tested in a real environment and are not just lab tested.
“Based on our Customers requirements we have recently expanded our range of products to include Acoustic Wall Vents, Acoustic Door Sealing kits and Acoustic Fire Hoods for use with down-lighters. All these products work towards maintaining Part E on the relevant structure.” Describes the company’s development manager, Tom Sykes.
If you are planning a new build or conversion and would like to discuss how to exceed Part E then Sound Service should be your first port of call.
Sound Service offer free impartial technical advice without pressure selling and regularly works along Architects and Specifiers.

Acoustic Fire Hoods
Down lighters in ceilings are widely used in commercial buildings. Each ceiling is subject to fire regulations and where applicable the ceiling construction needs to be fire rated.
However, once a hole has been made in the ceiling for a down lighter, the integrity of the construction and its ability to perform in a fire can be reduced significantly. To combat this we have introduced an Acoustic Fire Hoods to maximum protection for holes
created by the introduction of a down lighter and to allow for maximum ease of fitting.
In a fire situation the Acoustic Fire Hoods cover expands internally to fill all the available space with a highly insulating fire resistant char. Thus, the fire is unable to penetrate the hole and the cover is able to give additional insulation protection to the ceiling void to reduce the chance of heat build up and ignition of flammable materials such as accumulated dust and insulation. These Acoustic Fire Hoods are available in many sizes to suit the cut out space.

Acoustic Laminate Underlay
Our Acoustic Laminate Underlay is designed specifically to reduce the impact noise (walking/footfall) creating when walking on a laminate, engineered wood and solid timber floors. When you walk on these surfaces a large amount of impact as well as airborne
noise is created (due to the hard surface) this can often be a nuisance to the people living below.
The Acoustic Laminate Underlay is made up of a 4.2mm layer of high density resilient rubber sponge with a foil faced moisture barrier laminated to one side. It can be easily cut with a knife or scissors and if used in conjunction with our soundproofing mats it will provide both impact AND airborne noise reduction through the floor with minimal height rise.
Acoustic Performance
Weighted Impact Sound Improvement Index (Delta Lw) 27dB!!
This is a substantial improvement in impact noise transfer over not having an acoustic underlay and if soundproofing mats are used in conjunction in addition, this figure will be even higher.
Sone wood/laminate flooring test Drum sound emission (Overall loudness)
Typical 2.5mm PE Foam=77 Sone - this product tested at only 53 Sone!! (Sone is a Drum Sound test and SONE is a measurement of perceived loudness, scaled for human auditory sensitivities. The result of this test is simply shown as a SONE rating.)

Independently tested, this acoustic insulation is the popular choice for all flat conversions and complies with the latest Building Regulation requirements.
This unique resilient mat is also ideal for soundproofing a floor in existing flats, homes and a wide variety of other domestic uses and should be used to create an independent floating floor to reduce impact and airborne noise nuisance.
Acousticel M-20
Wall Soundproofing M20AD is designed to absorb and reduce the amount of airborne noise which penetrates poorly insulated party walls. Easy to fit, this 20mm thick insulation is simply glued to the existing wall with two layers of 12.5mm plasterboard bonded on top and is an easy solution if you are disturbed by noise from your neighbours.
It is ideal for insulating walls separating stairs and hallways where space is at a premium. Particularly useful for meeting Part E building regulations for airborne noise control through a wall.
A soundproofed wall using M-20 has a sound insulation value of 48dB DnT,W+Ctr which is approx. an 87% reduction in sound transmission and complies with the requirements of the latest Approved Document E Building Regulations. It is therefore, ideal for insulating walls separating stairs and hallways where space is at a premium.

We’re all becoming more environmentally aware with eco-friendly versions of everything from light bulbs to wall paint. But, when it comes to the very fabric of your home, it’s often too late and too expensive to opt for green building materials, right? Wrong says soundproofing and sound absorption specialists, Sound Service (Oxford) Ltd.
With hundreds of soundproofing solutions available in the current market place for commercial and domestic use, Sound Service (Oxford) Ltd manufacture from sustainable materials such as recycled rubber where possible.
“Very often, homeowners and tenants want to do their bit for the environment but can’t find a way that fits in with their budget and domestic requirements,” said Tom Sykes, Development Manager. “Even in new builds, it’s hard to incorporate eco-friendly materials into things such as walls and floors. 50 % of our soundproofing products are made from recycled or sustainable materials making practical home improvement more socially responsible.”
According to World Health statistics, half of the UK population is currently being exposed to more than the recommend levels of noise pollution, making soundproofing materials an excellent starting point for those wanting to go green in their home.
Noise pollution doesn’t just come from noisy industrial equipment, airplanes and trains but from everyday activities such as loud music, shouting, home improvements and cars. Soundproofing products can stop this noise seeping out into the surrounding environment, reducing noise pollution levels.
Even noisy neighbours can be given the green treatment with a recycled rubber Acousticel wall panel. Designed to upgrade the sound insulation properties of party walls in the home and all types of domestic properties, the rubber mats are an environmentally friendly way to insulate a noisy neighbour with a minimum loss of room space.
In addition to sourcing suppliers committed to a more sustainable manufacturing process, Sound Service (Oxford) Ltd are implementing a green office policy, making more use of recycled products.

Working with Wimbledon Chase Primary School to Achieve BB93
Sound Service are today installing Echosorption Plus ceiling tiles and Wallsorption into Wimbledon Chase Primary School to help them conform to the BB93 regulations.
The install team will be covering the ceilings of many classrooms and and some of the walls to help absorb the sound generated by the children. "Many classrooms have poor acoustics. Adults will guess at missing words, children find it much harder to fill in the gaps and their educational development can suffer." outlines Stephen Young, Technical Manager for the company.
The end result will mean the children can hear the teacher more clearly and they are able to concentrate harder on their work.

Sound Service were approached by the E - Research Department of Oxford University and asked if they would install a suitable product to reduce the echo in their hi-tech webcasting suit. After sending a technical adviser to the site it was decided that the rear wall would need to be covered in Wallsorption to absorb as much sound as possible. The installation is taking place today.
